It has been re-built on the original site and enlarged from a single storey into a three-storey building, to provide more primary school places for the growing needs of the local community. The multi-million pound development will become a 3-form entry school accommodating up to 720 children over the next 7 years.
Carmel was awarded the mechanical, electrical, design and build contracts for this large project and it was a first collaboration with main contractor, Higgins Construction and client, Tower Hamlets Ltd.
Bob Paine, Carmel’s lead project manager, reported that project works began on 17th February 2016 with a proposed completion date of 23rd January 2017, which was extended to 17th February 2017. The design needed built-in flexibility to suit the needs and requirements of the client and a Carmel team worked tirelessly to achieve a quality installation that met the client’s high expectations.
Some innovative and efficient systems were implemented during the installation, including a natural ventilation system, utilising fabric ‘socks’ to bring in external air from open windows; stack ventilation louvres in the roof and low level wall louvres draw fresh air through the building. Other energy efficient and cost effective systems use daylight controlled lighting and underfloor heating.
The teaching environment has been promoted and enhanced by the installation of large interactive screens which are operated via laptops in all classrooms, enabling children to take an active part in their own learning. Category 6 (Cat6) enhanced network cabling was also installed to facilitate high-speed data transfer rates and give complete WIFI coverage.
Bob informed ‘The project was finally handed over on 17th February to the satisfaction of Tower Hamlets and ultimately the school staff. Neil Haring, Higgins Contracts Manager, personally thanked each member of the team for a job well done’.
A final note of recommendation has to be from the biggest critics, the children, who were reported to have said they really like the underfloor heating!
Well done Carmel!
